My Five Things Challenge:

Goodwill Donations – Set of green plates

*In an attempt to maintain a level of simplicity in my life and in my home, I have set a goal of removing 5 unwanted/unneeded items per week.  The method of removal varies – some things I donate or give away, others I try to sell on ebay and Craigslist, and sometimes it is just a matter of throwing something away or recycling something that is no longer useful.  Click on the link at the top of this post to see my original Five Things post and where the idea came from.*

Simply Me

I have been trying to come to terms with my feelings and thoughts about what others say to me about parenting.  I do not feel incomplete without children.  I don’t hate children (although I dislike parents that don’t take responsibility for being parents).

I am very bothered when someone tells me that I would make a great mother.  I know most women would receive this as a compliment, but to me it does not come across as a compliment, even if the intent is innocent.  I feel as though the person is making the assumption that just because it is a natural desire for them that I must also have that desire, and therefore would need the reassurance that I could do the job well.

I realize that as a defense mechanism against this, I have become cynical and hateful about children, which is not a truth about me.  It seems as though subconsciously I am trying to convince others that I would be a horrible parent, just so they will stop bringing it up.

I want to celebrate in the joy that others find in fulfilling their desire for children.  I want to be able to encourage them and be happy for them.  I don’t want to feel that my lack of desire is being trivialized.

Please stop trying to convince me that I need to muster up this desire for children.  Try to imagine changing your mind about wanting to have children and you can imagine how impossible it would be for me to ‘will’ myself into changing my mind about not wanting children.  Try to remember that a compliment to you is not the same to everyone else.  Consider feelings and how something you say will be received.

New Projects Ahead

Thanks to our extremely generous families, we received quite a chunk of change for Christmas.  Here are the projects we will be tackling using our unexpected funds:

1)  Mounting our living room television.  Here is the post from getting the new tv in May.  The setup is still the same.

The Before:

A great place to get super inexpensive mounts and wires is monoprice.  We also used some of our Christmas moolah to bring in an Apple TV and an UPS with automatic voltage regulation.  (We have learned that our tv setup and garage door opener are on the same circuit and every time we opened and closed the garage door, it was straining our television and components.)

2)  I will be tackling the side wall in our master closet using an Elfa system from The Container Store.  After researching the options for hanging slide-out drawers, the Elfa drawers had the highest praise for reliability.  You can see the post from our big closet reorganization back in November 2008 here.

The Before:

3)  And lastly, we will be installing the Rubbermaid Fasttrack system on the wall next to my workstation in the garage.  It has become increasingly cluttered since my garage makeover back in October 2008, and I am ready to get things up off the floor, but still easily accessible.

A Very Etsy Christmas

Once again, I turned to Etsy for a lot of our Christmas gifts:

For one of my sister-in-laws, I found this pie server and paired it with one of her favorites – buttermilk pie – yum!

For my other sister-in-law and brother-in-law (an expectant couple), a pregnancy journal and hand-cut copper stork ornament:

For my mom, sister, and mother-in-law, super cute camera strap covers:

For my two best friends, return address stamps:
